Most business owners set up a Google listing, a Facebook page and maybe a Yelp profile, and then move on. Years later, those listings have drifted apart: an old phone number here, a previous address there, a description that no longer fits.
That drift matters more than it used to.
How Google and AI tools decide to trust you
Google, ChatGPT and other AI tools don’t just read your website. They compare what your website says with what the rest of the web says about you. When your name, address, phone number and services match across many sources, they’re confident it’s all the same, real business.
When the details conflict, they’re less sure. They might show the wrong phone number, describe you as something you’re not, or simply leave you out and recommend someone else.
Where conflicts usually hide
- Old directory listings from a previous address or phone number
- Nextdoor, Yelp or Facebook pages set up years ago and never updated
- A LinkedIn company page with a different business name
- Data-aggregator sites that copied an old listing
- A second Google Business Profile someone created by mistake
How to clean them up
1. Decide on one official version. Write down exactly how your business name, address, phone number, website and a one-sentence description should appear. Use it everywhere.
2. Fix the big ones first. Google Business Profile, your website, Facebook, Yelp, Bing Places, Apple Business Connect and Nextdoor.
3. Search for the rest. Search your old phone numbers and old addresses in Google. Every result that shows your business with outdated details is a listing to fix or remove.
4. Add structured data to your website. LocalBusiness schema gives Google and AI tools your official details in a format they read directly.
We did this ourselves
When we rebuilt the EffectMedia website, we found our own listings had drifted too: a Nextdoor page with an old description and a different phone number. We fixed them along with the new site, because a business that sells AI search help should practice what it preaches.
